About Unidos South OC
Unidos South OC is a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening neighborhoods in South Orange County that have been disproportionately affected by inequities and social challenges. We believe that change happens at the community level, where residents have the power to shape their own neighborhoods. By prioritizing place-based initiatives over single-issue approaches, we foster interconnected solutions that promote well-being, leadership, and access to resources. Through advocacy, partnerships, and resident-led initiatives, Unidos South OC works to build a more equitable and connected community where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
About Día Del Niño
Día del Niño (Children’s Day) is an international holiday established to commemorate the first international human rights treaty: the Declaration on the Rights of the Child, created by the League of Nations in 1924. Each government committed to protecting these rights, and the Day of the Child became an important holiday in many countries, particularly in Latin America. Here in San Juan Capistrano, Día del Niño has been celebrated for many years with a festival for children at Stone Field. Unidos South OC has been coordinating this event since 2018 as a cross between a cultural festival and a resource fair. This is a collaborative event; each booth, activity, and performance is donated by various community members. Activities are offered free of charge; food sales benefit local PTAs.

This event is located in the census tract that has the highest rates of poverty in all of South Orange County.
Unfortunately it is also a location where pockets of need are physically distant from the majority of the county’s resources.
Residents here need easier access to information and support. We bring the resources to where the community is, combining the event with a cultural festival ensures high participation.

39% of the city of San Juan Capistrano speaks Spanish at home, in fact the city has spoken Spanish longer than it has spoken English! Many of our community members grew up celebrating Día Del Niño and this event helps families to pass down their traditions. When families share cultural traditions, intergenerational conflict is reduced and families experience a closer bond.
