After Years of Struggling
I’ve been thinking about the 40 developmental assets for Youth Development, especially 1. A Caring Neighborhood and 2. A Community that Values Youth .
This past Thursday Josefina Manriquez called to thank us because her son finally got a bus pass after years of struggling with obstacles. She was so grateful, and it reminded me how our advocacy makes a real difference in people’s lives.
Then, on that same day, Estrella, a student who always greets me, stopped me for a quick handshake and a smile. She introduced me to her friend and said, "This is Miriam, she helped you get a bus pass." In that moment, I realized how much kids recognize and appreciate our efforts, and that they know we genuinely care about them.
It’s these moments that remind me why our work matters. We’re building meaningful relationships and showing the youth that they’re valued in their community.
